5 Tips To Help You Edit Your Closet

Editing your closet is not about throwing things away,  but clarifying and making it easier to see what you have.   It helps to have some organization too!   This will eliminate the stress you feel when you often feel you have nothing to wear.  Not to mention, a closet edit will help you to save time and redefine yourself.

Here are 5 tips to help you edit your closet:

1.  Matching hangers

Uniform hangers keep your clothes at the same level,  making it easier to see what you have in your closet,  creates more space and it reduces visual clutter.   Try to use hangers with some sort of foam or grip . (stay away from wire hangers).

2.  Collapsible rolling rack

A collapsible rolling rack will provide a reusable workstation.  It\’s great for temporarily hanging items as you edit.  Be sure to choose a strong sturdy rack.  It\’s great to use as you visualize and decide whether you\” love it\”  or will \” leave it\”.

3.  Full length mirror

This is truly an important and essential part of the editing process. This is the point you get the opportunity to try things on and see how well they fit from more that one angle and determine your body type.  Be sure to have good lighting near your mirror.  Make it more fun and invite a friend.  Hopefully a friend will give their honest opinion.

4. Create your  \”love it\”, \”Leave it\” and \”Alterations\” pile

Your \”Love it\” item should be placed on you new uniform (all the same) hangers and place back into the closet.  Your \”Leave it\” items are to be bagged up and place near the door ready to go.   Your \”alterations\” pile are for items that are flattering but need a little tweaking.  Be sure to ask yourself is it flattering or does it represent me?

5.  Stay focused

Write a statement clarifying your personal style.  Keep this statement visible so that you can refer to it for reinforcement.  Listen to music while you work it will help you move along quickly.  Invite a friend to help you make your editing decisions. Take a few minutes to break and refresh yourself, get a light snack and be sure to stay hydrated.  The key is cleaning as you go.  This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and help you to appreciated the process as you are moving along.

  1. Thank you for these tips! The uniform hangers definitely make a difference! I’m going to have to check into the collapsible rack. I can see how that can come in handy.

I would love to go shopping with you! But, In the mean time stay tuned for more tips to make your wardrobe experience.

  2. Theses are great tips. A few years ago I did the switch everything to one type of hanger and I love how it’s worked out. I also have them all face one way at The beginning of the season and when I wear an item it goes back hung with the hanger facing the opposite direction. At the end of the season if the hanger is still facing the way it started it is reevaluated or it gets donated to a friend or good will.

  3. I’ve seen the matching hangars tip and we’ve yet to completely do it. Little by little though, we’ve been grabbing the same type of hangars from Ikea. It’s that dang budget that keeps us from getting then all at one time!
