Roger Lee Dance, The Arts, The Mission And What You Wear

Look who we ran into recently!  We got the opportunity to have a chat with Roger Lee of Roger Lee Arts. We couldn’t wait to find out more about what the company was up to, their mission and how they plan to impact the community through dance.  Of course I couldn’t let Roger get away without to inquiring about the costumes.   There is something special about when the choreography, music, hair, makeup and costumes all come together.  Let’s see what Roger had to say:

Tracey- How did Roger Lee Dance Company come about?

Roger Lee Dance Company was born in 2012. It was the culmination of my love for choreography and performance. I stepped out on faith and produced our first concert in April 2012. This spring we are blessed to be celebrating our 5th anniversary and 10th concert series. My dance company has also performed for thousands of people at Philadanco’s Annual Founders Day Concert, 2016 WaWa Welcome America Festival, and 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Tracey- What is your Dance company’s mission?

The mission of Roger Lee Dance Company is to provide professional dance performance for the community. We fulfill this mission by producing two concert series per year (spring and Christmas).

Tracey- Who do you admire in the dance industry?

I admire many incredible people in the dance community including Joan Myers Brown, Debbie Allen, Mia Michaels, Alvin Ailey, and Alwin Nikolais.

Tracey- What is the Roger Lee Dance Company proudest achievement?

Roger Lee Dance Company’s proudest accomplishment is performing for over 25,000 people at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Tracey- How important is hair, makeup and costumes to you ?

Hair, makeup, and costumes are very important to the performance. I believe that dance is a visual art form. The visual elements are extremely important because they enhance the dance movement. Hair, makeup, and costumes takes dances to a polished performance quality. It is what separates a performance from a rehearsal, in my opinion.

Tracey- Do you offer classes? If so what kind?

Yes, I offer a fun adult hip-hop dance class on Thursday nights, 7:15-8:15 pm at Equilibrium Dance Academy (1802 S. Broad Street, 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19130).

Tracey- What projects are you currently working on?

Roger Lee Dance Company is presenting its 5th anniversary at 10th concert series Timeless. The show is family-friendly, runs for around an hour, and ends with an inspiring question and answer session with the cast. The shows are Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at 8pm at Performance Garage (1515 Brandywine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130) and tickets cost $20 online at and . We are also running a fundraiser for our 5th anniversary season where we hope to raise $5,000 this year. Please feel free to contribute any amount at  Every dollar helps!

Tracey- Where do you see the Roger Lee Dance Company in the future?

I see Roger Lee Dance Company continuing to produce our dance concert series for my hometown of Philadelphia, PA. We cannot do it without the support of our community. We appreciate each and every one of your contributions. God bless you all!

Tracey- Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I am an award-winning entrepreneur, educator, author, speaker, and multi-disciplinary artist from Philadelphia, PA. As the owner of Roger Lee Arts, LLC, I lent my creative expertise to world-renowned brands including Philadanco, Joffrey Ballet School, Broadway Dance Center, WaWa Welcome America Festival, and Democratic National Convention. What Should I Wear To Work

 Guest article

In today’s competitive world we can’t deny that our appearance makes a statement about who we are and what we represent without us saying a word. It is by the way we dress and the way we present ourselves in which other people are then able to create the first impression of us. First impressions last and people have the tendency to prejudge us as a result of our appearance. Knowing how much of an impact on the way that we dress has on others means that the power of dress is in the palm of our hands. We can cleverly use this power to radiate confidence and assert ourselves in the workplace.

Let’s look at a couple of examples of situations where you can harness the power of dress to make your mark.

Suppose you have a meeting with a highly-respected firm. It’s a job that you are super excited about and you want to make a great first impression with the interviewer. You want the employer to be focused on you, how knowledgeable and skilled you are for the job. Your speech should associate with what you are wearing. For example, if you are talking on a professional level would it not be wise to wear professional clothing? The last thing that you would want is to be wearing something inappropriate or ill-fitting that will detract the employer from what you are saying. You want the company to hold you in the highest regard. What you say makes 50% of creating an impression. Your dress makes the other 50%.

Style Tips

  1. Regardless of how casual and office setting may be, always dress business professional for an interview.
  2. Use your best judgement where you decide to include subtle pops of personality.
  3. Your most persuasive accessory is your confidence. A prepared attitude will lend you great success in an interview setting.

Unless we have been in the workforce for many years or have already created a reputable name for ourselves among other industry professionals it can be tough for an employee starting out trying to make their mark in a competitive business world. Depending on the work environment, profession or industry the way we dress can have a powerful impact on the way others view us in the workplace.

One thing that remains timeless in the world of business and professionalism is the dress shirt. We have all seen this wardrobe staple cross borders and genders within the past century. A crisp, definitive and straightforward item that you can wear in the workplace. Not only do you feel professional in a dress shirt it also seems to spark a confidence that seems to grab the attention of others.

Style Tips

  1. Avoid dressing more than 1 level up from your office dress code to avoid looking overdressed.
  2. If you work remote or from home dress as if you were in the office. This will help you to shift into a work mindset and today you never know if or when you’ll have to jump on a video conference.
  3. On Fridays or Casual days dress one level down from your regular office attire. Maintaining a polished image while dressing down is a respectable choice. Your sneakers should be clean and your denim, dark and well kept.
