7 Easy Ways To Update Your Style

Whether you are running a small business, heading out with girls, or going on a hot date  you are sending a message about yourself.  The first time you meet someone they have formed an opinion about you in a matter of seven seconds based on your appearance alone.  With a few simple steps you can send a positive message and make a great first impression.  If you want to be more memorable you have to step up your game.  Your don’t have to look like you stepped out of Vogue Magazine but investing in your look shows that you care about who you are and how you look.  Here is  a list of 7  easy ways to update your style:

  1.  Clean out your closet

People tend to hold onto clothes until the closet is overflowing.  Ask yourself: Does this piece represent who you are? Make three piles: one for items that fit well and look great on,  one for items that  no longer work or are appropriate for your image and one for items that need altered.  Clearing out clutter helps you determine what you still need.  Decide what is working for you and what is not.  Shop for pieces like jackets, pants, skirts and tops to add to your now revised closet.  These pieces will give you a variety of looks for different occasions.

  1.  Wear undergarments that enhance your body shape

Wearing the right underwear or body shaper for your body type is essential. For the best results choose well fitting undergarments that will enhance your body shape and figure.  Be sure to choose features and benefits over color and brand.  Choose the right size and look for quality fabric.  If you need a little help determining your bra size head on over to places like Nordstrom or Victoria Secret for a bra fitting.  Don’t forget that what you wear underneath your  clothes also makes a big difference to the way you feel!

  1.  Build around classic wardrobe pieces

Classic wardrobe pieces seem to never go out of fashion no matter what the current trends are. These classic basics are versatile and can be mixed, matched and layered to create a variety of looks. These essentials never seem to go out of style (Black turtleneck, little black dress, a jacket the defines your waist, white T-shirt, white button down shirt, pencil skirt, cardigan, trench coat, pea coat, solid colored stretch shirt, tank top, black slacks, black pumps, khakis, riding boots, pearl necklace, pearl or diamond stud earrings and a pair of jeans). Your wardrobe should consist of both the old and new classics.

  1.  Accessorize

The art of accessorizing is the secret to looking great in even the most basic clothes. Update your look with  variety of accessory styles that will bring color and character to the  outfit. Don’t be afraid to:  mix textures and prints, add bold colors, add a belt, rock a shiny clutch, wear junky jewelry, accessorize your hair or slip into a pair of sassy heels. Buy pieces that express your personality and remember not to overdo it.  Stick with one statement piece at a time.

5. Add a few trendy pieces

Buy a few trendy pieces to your wardrobe but try not to spend too much money since they only last a little while, then go out of style. To avoid looking like everyone else mix your trendy pieces with classic pieces. Try to stick to one to two trends in an outfit. Too many trends in one outfit will be way too busy.  Add pops of color to update outfits for the season without overdoing it.

6. Makeup and skincare

Bold lips are a classic way to add both impact and femininity to your look.  Your nails may seem like minor details, but they say a lot about you. Your skin is another important part of your body so treat it kindly with care, exfoliate and your skin will glow for you. Apply a face mask at least once a week.  Bold brows, minimal makeup and experimenting with color always works.

  1.  Try a new hair style

Give your hair a makeover, you don’t have to do any drastic changes, simple highlights or hair blow out makes an amazing difference. Just try moving the part from on side of the head to the other, this simple change can make it look as if you have a whole new hairstyle.  Try parting your hair on an angle, or creating a zigzag part for a funky look.  Consider going for bangs they create a dramatic difference.  This is quick and inexpensive!

3 Questions To Ask Yourself When Trying To Discover Your Personal Style

Do you ever wonder if your personal style even matters? Is it worth investing the time, money and effort?  Well think about that day you happened to put on an outfit that  made you feel great.  You couldn’t stop looking in the mirror and you may have even stopped traffic a couple of times on that day.  It was the day where everywhere you went someone told you that you looked amazing.  Shucks, no one may have even had to say a word you just felt like a million bucks!  Don’t you deserve to feel like a million bucks all the time. Yes you do! So why not be intentional?

You open your closet to see rows and rows of garments but you still feel like you have nothing to wear or maybe nothing you want to wear.  Sometimes odd pieces in your closet symbolizes a style you like but aren’t fully comfortable trying.  Believe me when I say we have all had moments when we have tried a look that was so stylish for someone else but bombed for us. I remember a job that required me to wear all black.  It was cool for the first couple of weeks but eventually I felt as if I disappeared when I got dressed.  I literally grew to dislike getting dressed in all black.  Finally I figured it out!  All black was so blah on me and did nothing for my complexion.  The fact of the matter was that I looked like everyone else! No way,I felt expressionless and it did nada for my persona. Urgh! this was definitely a creative stifling situation.  It is important for me to remind myself who I am by using my garments as a way of expressing myself.  It’s beneficial for everyone in their own right!  Here are 3 questions to ask yourself when trying to discover your personal style:

1 .Where do I spend the most time in my day and what am I doing?

Before reviewing your current wardrobe let’s first consider your lifestyle. Think about what percentage of your time you spend on different activities. You don’t want to continue buying active wear  when you spend most of your time in a corporate setting.  You want to be able to wear your garments long term and get a ton of wear out of them.  Ask yourself which of these 4 possible facets do you spend most of your time on based on your lifestyle. What do you do on a daily basis?  You won’t get a exhaustive answer but you will get a good starting point:

Professional – time spent in a work or attending meetings

Active – time spent doing outdoor activities, walking, exercising or sports

Social – time spent out with friends or at special events

Family – time spent at home with, with children or family

2. Do I know what styles resonates with me ?

Discover styles that you like by making a Pinterest board. Pinterest is an online pin board, a visual take on the social bookmarking site. People typically pin or save images they found on the web (or on Pinterest itself) to different boards (used to categorize their image collections).  If you don’t want to use Pinterest you can make a collage using pictures from a magazine.

You can search for outfits or search for celebrities for style inspiration. Make a board specifically to create your own style inspiration board. After you have chosen about 20 different images take note of reoccurring themes. What do you tend to like? Are most of the outfits monotone, florals, prints, V-necks etc. What type of statements do a majority of the pieces make? What are you most attracted to? Make a list of these things. Just remember it’s ok if your findings are not what you expected

3. Do I know what compliments me and what doesn’t ?

Don’t go running out to purchase everything that  is listed as an hot item on the fashion trend list. Sticking to a plan will prevent you from splurging on items that will be out of style before you know it or just doesn’t suit you . Know what looks good on you to make more informed choices when shopping and choosing outfits. Not sure about what pieces best fit you? Keep an eye out for clothing that suit your body shape and colors that compliment your skin tone. This will most likely happen to be those items that get you more compliments, you feel most comfortable in, and you find most flattering in photos. Take note of outfits that make you feel great. Just remember understanding your personal style is really all about being authentic and embracing your true self and not trying to be like anyone else!

Be empowered!

Less time on self awareness                                                                       Discovered more about herself

Comfy but less motivated                                                                           Seized new opportunities

Blended in with others                                                                                Stands out in a crowd

3 Simple Tips To Help You Feel Empowered

Have you ever had those moments when you have felt misunderstood? We all have moments more often than not when we feel disempowered.   You are not alone, there is nothing wrong with you! True empowerment means being authentic or true to yourself, even when the world teaches you to be someone else.   Here are 3 simple tips to help you to feel empowered:

1. Take the time to jot down your needs

Understanding your needs helps to bring a sense of relief and clarity in your life.  This relief can offer new positive emotional energy to fuel your positive direction in life and reduce your tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged. Ask yourself a few questions to help yourself determine your needs:

What are the weaknesses that I am aware of?

Identify your top 3 values (What values are most important to you?). This would be one’s judgment of what is important in life.

Ask yourself the question: Are you building your life around what’s important to you?

What strength and skills come up over and over again?

What skills have I practiced or mastered but could live without?

2. Set Goals

Setting attainable goals will help to keep you focused. Set goals both large and small. Setting goals will instantly help you to feel better about yourself and help you to choose where you want to go in life. When setting goals be sure to:

Align your goal with your purpose

Break your goal down into smaller measurable chunks that you can hit along the way to your big goal.

Reward yourself after each completing each goal.

3. Think positive thoughts

Think positive thoughts! Learn to recognize negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.  Negative thoughts can shut your mind off to new opportunities to a world that you didn’t know existed.  Just know that the outcome of your day is the way you respond.  Besides positive thinking can actually improve our overall happiness. Try implementing a several of these positive actions daily:

Practice gratitude! Think of something you are grateful for the moment your eyes open each morning and before you get out of the bed. The fact that your eyes opened is a good place to start!

Read positive affirmation daily. You can also incorporate tools like podcast, videos and books. Write down a positive quote and take it to your computer. Go ahead implement this step immediately!

Talk to yourself in the mirror, even if you feel silly, tell yourself, “Today is going to be a great day!”

Smile! Smiling naturally makes you feel better and it’s contagious. Before you know it others will be smiling as well.

3 Simple Steps To Declutter Your Closet

Yes it’s possible! You can smile every time you open your closet.

It’s the time of the year when we all want to declutter just about every area of over lives.  Why not start with our closets?  Clutter just brings about stress and it takes up our valuable time.  Disorganization can become extremely frustrating and living in a cluttered environment can cloud the mind. It’s time to take control of your closet. That’s right! You can do it!  Here are 3 simple steps to declutter your closet no matter what size it is:

1. Get to the root of your biggest closet obstacle.

Ask yourself the question what drives me crazy when I step into or open my closet? Is your closet so full that  you can hardly open and close the door?  It could be that you need to change your hangers so that they are thinner or uniform. With uniform hangers your clothes will all hang at the same length and be spaced evenly, creating  more space and a clean organized look.  Maybe you have a mountain of shoes that seem to take over the front of your closet.  Something as simple as facing your shoes in opposite direction of one another can save you a couple of inches. Don’t forget you can take advantage of your vertical space.  You can easily hang an over the door shoe rack over your door which leaves extra space on your closet floor.  You have more space than you think! What’s the real problem?

2. Take it all out! Purge, purge, purge!

That’s right you can do it! It’s time to sort.  Pull it all out of the closet and sort through every piece of clothing that you own. It sounds complicated but it’s really not.. Just pull it all out!  Get three 3×5 cards and label each one donate, trash and keep. As you are sorting through the clothes separate them into the appropriate labeled pile. Don’t let sentimentality distract you from your mission. Remember you are headed towards a simple and streamlined closet. No more “It will come around again” , when it does you most likely will be a different person. So go ahead and let it go! Trust me, you will be so proud of yourself!

3.  Separate your clothes into categories.

Placing “likes with likes” to take stock of your inventory. Use garment organizers to separate your clothes into categories that work for you for example the type of item, occasions, seasons, etc.  Put all pants together, all tops together, all dresses together, and then place them all in order of color, light to dark. Store your most-used items at eye level, less-used items below, and least-used items up high. Designate a place for everything in your closet. Shirts in one place, pants in another, and so on.  These simple steps brings a sense of order, creates less stress and will save you a ton of time each day.
