Yes it\’s possible! You can smile every time you open your closet.

It\’s the time of the year when we all want to declutter just about every area of over lives.  Why not start with our closets?  Clutter just brings about stress and it takes up our valuable time.  Disorganization can become extremely frustrating and living in a cluttered environment can cloud the mind. It\’s time to take control of your closet. That\’s right! You can do it!  Here are 3 simple steps to declutter your closet no matter what size it is:

1. Get to the root of your biggest closet obstacle.

Ask yourself the question what drives me crazy when I step into or open my closet? Is your closet so full that  you can hardly open and close the door?  It could be that you need to change your hangers so that they are thinner or uniform. With uniform hangers your clothes will all hang at the same length and be spaced evenly, creating  more space and a clean organized look.  Maybe you have a mountain of shoes that seem to take over the front of your closet.  Something as simple as facing your shoes in opposite direction of one another can save you a couple of inches. Don\’t forget you can take advantage of your vertical space.  You can easily hang an over the door shoe rack over your door which leaves extra space on your closet floor.  You have more space than you think! What\’s the real problem?

2. Take it all out! Purge, purge, purge!

That\’s right you can do it! It\’s time to sort.  Pull it all out of the closet and sort through every piece of clothing that you own. It sounds complicated but it\’s really not.. Just pull it all out!  Get three 3×5 cards and label each one donate, trash and keep. As you are sorting through the clothes separate them into the appropriate labeled pile. Don\’t let sentimentality distract you from your mission. Remember you are headed towards a simple and streamlined closet. No more \”It will come around again\” , when it does you most likely will be a different person. So go ahead and let it go! Trust me, you will be so proud of yourself!

3.  Separate your clothes into categories.

Placing “likes with likes” to take stock of your inventory. Use garment organizers to separate your clothes into categories that work for you for example the type of item, occasions, seasons, etc.  Put all pants together, all tops together, all dresses together, and then place them all in order of color, light to dark. Store your most-used items at eye level, less-used items below, and least-used items up high. Designate a place for everything in your closet. Shirts in one place, pants in another, and so on.  These simple steps brings a sense of order, creates less stress and will save you a ton of time each day.

  1. This is right on time. I need to purge. I have clothes that I don’t wear, I’m sure could find a great home in the Goodwill
